Content

The course aims at providing knowledge and competencies on the basic research planning techniques with special attention to the research activity that will be organized for the MSc thesis work.
The teaching will be based on concrete examples and applications in real cases. At all stages, emphasis will be placed on interpreting and reporting the results in a rigorous and clear way.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • qualitative analysis;
  • question-wording;
  • descriptive statistics and visual display of information;
  • statistical inference;
  • sampling design.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to sketch out a survey design, from the problem definition and the conception to the analysis of the results, both qualitative and quantitative.

Teaching and learning methods

The main topics are presented through lectures

Learning methods encompass also homework and classwork.

Teaching materials used in class (slides) and additional readings and media will be made available through the e-learning Moodle platform of the School.

Type of assessment

  • Individual and group
  • Written exam
  • Both group and individual work will be organized and assessed. At the end of lessons, students will deal with a qualifying examination without a final mark (”passed-not passed” judgement).
