Agroforestry, Ecology, Governance & Livelihoods: GloFor Students Tackle Forest Challenges in Thailand

22 students from the Global Forestry (GloFor) Master’s programme recently completed a two-week intensive field research experience in northern Thailand, transforming classroom theory into hands-on environmental science.

The Journey

After two months of project design in Europe, our first-year cohort travelled to Thailand’s Chiang Dao region in February 2026, collaborating with 13 students from Kasetsart University (Bangkok), and guided by six GloFor supervisors, and three Kasetsart faculty members.

Together they:

  • looked at the forests and agroforestry systems of the region
  • focused on how resilient these systems are to human disturbances and climate change, how they are managed, and their role in the livelihoods of local communities.

The Impact

After ten days in the field, the students did some initial analyses and interpretations of their data and presented their preliminary findings in Bangkok to an academic panel from Kasetsart University and the GloFor Master’s programme.

The Partnership

This successful initiative was funded by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) and co-organized by the five GloFor consortium partners and Kasetsart University.

For the second consecutive year, the Thailand Field Course has proven invaluable in training the next generation of forestry professionals to work across cultures and continents.

🙏 The GloFor Master’s consortium extends its deepest gratitude to the Faculty of Forestry at Kasetsart University and EACEA for making this transformative experience possible.
